Americans Buy 90 Million Pounds of Marshmallows each year!

Whether you prefer yours lightly browned or charred to a crisp, chances are you think “marshmallows” when you imagine cooking over a summer campfire. In fact, Americans buy 90 million pounds of marshmallows each year! Add a piece of chocolate and sandwich the pair between two crispy graham cracker squares and you have yourself the quintessential summer treat.

The first mention of this campfire favorite is in the 1927 edition of the Girl Scout manual Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts. Suggestive of the dessert’s addictive qualities, it was dubbed “some more.” Later in the 1938 guide “Recreational Programs for Summer Camps” by William H. Gibson, the treat is called by the shortened name which we now knowthe “s’more.” While you can officially celebrate this winning combination on August 10th, National S’more Day, you need not limit your celebrating to one day in a year. This combination has become so beloved that one can find s’more-flavored varieties in everything from ice cream to martinis.

Not planning a camping trip anytime soon? Here is a recipe that will allow you to enjoy this favorite summer treat in the comfort of your own home:
